Abstract: "Digital technology has radically changed the way students use visual materials, making them easy to create and use. Easy access to materials has created new opportunities for teaching and learning in an academic environment that has traditionally favoured text as a source of knowledge. However, the abundance of images and the ease of copying and pasting do not mean that students are able to select appropriate visual materials, evaluate them in terms of relevance, quality and copyright, and use them effectively in their written work and presentations. This presentation will present the results of a research project that examined the use of visual materials by students in the context of academic work. The study was conducted using the Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) method. The results indicate that students use a variety of visual materials in their presentations but rarely include them in their written work. Students use visual materials primarily as illustrative objects or sources of information. This study shows that despite living in a visually rich world, students are not experts in the use of visual materials and need help in developing their visual literacy.
