The University Centre of Excellence IMSErt – Interacting Minds, Societies, Environments is seeking applicants for a 4-year PhD student position at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School “Academia Copernicana”, the prestigious PhD programme at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

The thematic scope of the project may concern the broadly understood interconnection of knowledge studies and memory studies. The specific topic, choice of issues or methodological approach is free.

The academic supervisor of the project is the director of the IMSErt Center of Excellence, Professor Adam Kola. In 2016-2019 he was Visiting Scholar at the University of Chicago. His research has been focused on the Eastern and Central European intellectual and literary history of the 19th and 20th centuries and global knowledge transfer. In 2018, he published the book Socialist postcolonialism. Memory Reconsolidation. He is the author of two other books and editor of several volumes on philosophy and ethics of interpretation, semi/peripheral humanities, and comparative literature. He is the author of about 100 papers in Polish, Czech, Russian, German and English, and does translations from Czech and English into Polish. He has led and participated in several Polish and international research projects. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal “History of Intellectual Culture. International Yearbook of Knowledge and Society” (De Gruyter), “Acta Structuralica. International Journal for Structuralist Research”, and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Comparative Literature Association.

2. Offer for PhD applicants

The University Centre of Excellence IMSErt, Interacting Minds, Societies, Environments, is seeking applicants for a 4-year PhD student position in Literary Studies at the Doctoral School of Humanities, Theology and Arts Academia Artium Humaniorum, a PhD programme at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

The thematic scope of the project should include 20th and 21st century literature, comparative studies, ethics, and the philosophy of politics. We are particularly interested in projects offering an interdisciplinary approach to the representation of the face, its disfigurement, and relation to the politics of personhood. The issue of female face/lessness, as well as its potential to redraw boundaries between ethics and aesthetics, is one of the themes of central interest in the proposed research, seeking for novel definitions of what it means to be human. Anna Branach Kallas, Associate Professor at the Centre of Excellence IMSErt at Nicolaus Copernicus, will be the supervisor of this project. Her research interests include the representation of trauma and war, postcolonialism, corporeality, health humanities and comparative studies. She is the recipient of several research grants and fellowships, founded, among others, by the National Science Centre (Poland), the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange, the Foundation for Polish Science, the International Council for Canadian Studies, and the Stefan Batory Foundation. The thematic scope of the project is located within the domain of organisational behaviour. Specifically, it combines diversity management issues, including culture, age and gender, and relationships built in organisations. Within this project, both qualitative and quantitative studies are acceptable; however, mixed-method approach is recommended. Prof. Aldona Glińska-Neweś will supervise the project from the Centre of Excellence IMSErt as the leader of the FUTURE Team – Sustainable Development and the Society of the Future. The thematic scope of the project is to combine memory studies and the history of knowledge. Adam Kola will supervise the project from the Centre of Excellence IMSErt. Nicolaus Copernicus, seen not only from the perspective of the history of knowledge but also from memory studies, will be particular – though not exclusive – the project’s focus. The project is related to the 550th anniversary of Copernicus’ birth and the preparation of a large anniversary conference in 2023, in which the PhD student will be involved. However, other topics combining memory studies and the history of knowledge are welcome.
